Vineyard Of Hope Pastor Has Vision For Osawatomie

By Jeff Gulley

Ken Tyson was one of many helping prepare the Vineyard of Hope’s float in the 2009 John Brown Jamboree parade.

Months earlier, Tyson began to drive down from Kansas City to help the small church as they tried to reenergize and grow a youth group.

That night at the parade, Tyson saw something in Osawatomie.

“There were so many young families and young people in town that night,” he said. “I just thought this is where I needed to be.”

On Easter Sunday, Ken and his wife Missy started their full-time ministry in Osawatomie when Ken took over as senior pastor of the Vineyard of Hope Assembly of God.

Not much of Tyson’s ministry is what you would consider traditional. He doesn’t look like the traditional pastor, doesn’t dress like a traditional pastor. What he brings to ministry is a love for people and building relationships in a church where everyone is accepted.

“We are a pretty young church but we have a passion for serving the Lord,” Tyson said.

Tyson grew up as a pastor’s kid but along the way got caught up in a culture of drugs, meth and alcohol.”

“God saved me from that lifestyle in 2000 and I have spent the last 11 years in ministry,” he said.

Those 11 years of ministry have included youth work, praise and worship leader and leading a celebrate recovery group.

Friday night, Tyson hosted the first night of fellowship with the church youth group called Reborn. More than 20 teenagers showed up for the first night and enjoyed food, games and a praise band made up of adults including Tyson.

“The group came up with the name themselves,” he said. “This is their youth group and we want to build relationships and give the kids a place to come and call their own. What we are finding though, is that these kids are hungry for the Lord.”
