City Council Considers Recycling Plan

By Jeff Gulley

The Osawatomie City Council is again considering a plan to make recycling mandatory for city residents.

The council discussed the plan with Larry and Bryce Smith of L&K Services Thursday night.

“The one thing I can tell you for sure is that we will not be picking up yard waste after this year,” Larry Smith said. “The council needs to address that issue but as far as recycling, that is an option.”

The plan being discussed is similar to what Paola started in October of 2010. L&K would pick up household trash once a week with the second pickup for recycling. According to Smith there would be no increase in cost to Osawatomie residents.

The council will discuss the plan at its next work session.

In other news the council:

- Held a final performance hearing for the Community Development Block Grant for the Osawatomie Library Rehabilitation and Upgrade Grant. No comments were made from the public. The council then acted to close out the grant officially ending phase one of the project.

- Approved a bid to convert the former digger truck to a dump truck at a cost $17,506. Council member Tamara Maichel cast the lone no vote.

- Approved a cereal malt beverage license for the Quick Stop at 309 Eastgate Drive.

- Discussed changing the name of the John Brown Jamboree. Council member Karen La Duex said the tourism committee had discussed changing the name of the Freedom Festival to the John Brown Freedom Festival to more accurately reflect the nature of the event. The council agreed, but suggested both events could carry the John Brown name. No action was taken but the consensus was to use the John Brown name on both events.
