100 Years Ago

Mr. S. S. Whiteford bought the stock of Rantoul Gas Co. the latter part of last week. He bought nearly all of the field last fall, the deal being closed Nov. 8. With the purchase of the company he gets more gas territory and will have more gas than can be used in Rantoul. The surplus will find a ready market here.

There is no doubt that at the meeting of directors of the Missouri Pacific Iron-Mountain Railway, in St. Louis, March 14, a new president will be elected and several directors will be dropped from the board and new members elected. The indications are that Mr. C. E. Clark, first vice-president, will be dropped from the directorate along with several others who have been members of the board for several years. Whether Mr. Elliott takes charge as president or not seems to remain with that gentleman’s own opinion as to whether the reconstructing and building up of the Missouri Pacific.

William Chestnut was up from Parker, Thursday on his way to Omaha, where he expects to spend a week with his son Charles. He spent the winter at Hot Springs, Arkansas, and feel s much better than he did when he left Parker.

75 Years Ago

George A. York was elected superintendent of the Osawatomie schools for his twelfth consecutive year at a meeting of the school board Monday evening. George has been connected with the schools here twelve years, and next year will be his thirteenth. He came here in the fall of 1926 as principal of the high school following his graduation from Kansas State Teacher’s college of Pittsburg in the spring. He held the position of principal for one year and was promoted to superintendent.

At the same meeting, D. A. Morgan was elected to his third year as principal of the high school and Ida Mullins was again named principal of the Meek school.

The Superintendent’s office instructed passenger trainment in connection with air conditioning passenger cars that when outside temperature reaches 71 degrees they should maintain the following schedule: Outside 71 degrees they should maintain the following schedule: Outside 71 degrees, inside 70; Outside 73, inside 71; Outside 76, inside 72; Outside 79, inside 73.

Mrs. Clay Whiteford and daughters Margaret and Elizabeth of Lawrence spent Sunday here visiting Mr. nad Mrs. Roy Grant.

50 Years Ago

FORT BRAGG, N. C. – Army Sp-4 Adrian Richards, son of Mrs. Bethel M. Smith, 836 Chestnut St., Osawatomie, Kan., recently was airlifted with the 82d Airborne Division’s 782d Maintenance Bn. to Panama where he participated in a paratroop drop during Exercise Solidarity, March 1-4.

Richards is regularly assigned as an auto repairman in the battalion’s Co. B at Fort Bragg. He entered the Army in 1958 and was last stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

The 22-year-old soldier is a 1956 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

Tom Coker, leading scorer of the Osawatomie High basketball team in the season just closed, has been given honorable mention in the all-state Class A team as picked by the Topeka Daily Capital.

Coker, a 5-9 senior, was also named to the Northeast Kansas All Area team in Class A.

25 Years Ago

Six students have been recognized during March for good citizenship at Osawatomie Middle School.

Students cited for the week of March 3-7 were Nicki Keast, sixth grade; Robert Jackson, seventh grade; and Mike Stewart, eighth grade.

Cited March 10-14 were Annabel Gabales, sixth grade; Angela Culbertson, seventh grade; and Frank Hart, eighth grade.

The students are selected by OMS teachers. Each winner receives a gift from the Osawatomie Chamber of Commerce.

Teamworkers Class of the First Christian Church celebrated its 56th anniversary at its regular monthly meeting last Wednesday in the home of Thelma McCoach.

After the meal, a birthday cake and ice cream were served. Two charter members were present, Verl Pettit and Ruth Cockran. Others present were Marguerite Sherman, Amy Fultz, Clara Mays, Gladys Robinson, Bill Robinson, Della Craft, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Shelden, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Hartford and Dr. Robert Banister.

Seven new members were initiated into Sub-Debs Monday night when they met at Poncho’s for dinner and meeting. Stacy Bolling, Julie Heinerikson, Jody Cornett, Denise Burns, Marcie McDowell, Joy Lynn Troutman and Mellissa Spurgeon are the new members.

The Miami County Area Retired Teachers Association was served breakfast Tuesday in the Beagle United Methodist Church Forty members attended.

Chris D-Adamo of the Olathe Boot Co. gave the program. He explained how boots are made and showed various leathers that are used. He said about 2,400 boots a day are made at the plant.

Members of the Golden Age Club met Tuesday in Memorial Hall for a buffet luncheon. Myron Cadwell gave the invocation.

Cleo Franklin, president, conducted the meeting and led the members in the flag salute.

The book, O Ye Jigs and Julups, by Virginia Gary Hudson was reviewed by Gladys Cadwell.

Mrs. Franklin was recognized for her birthday. Nellie McKern and Kittie Wilson announced they both had been married 66 years ago this month.

NORFOLK, Va.—Navy Petty officer 2nd Class Jeffery A. Kerr is serving in the Adriatic Sea near Bosnia aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. A native of Parker, Kan., he and others are on a six-month deployment in the area.

Kerr is a son of Albert L. and Rita M. Kerr of Parker. He is a 1986 graduate of Prairie View High School at La Cygne, Kan. and joined the navy in August 1986.
