Taming The Donkeys

By Jeff Gulley

With his arm in a sling to support a separated shoulder, Mike Moon said he would participate in Donkey ball again next year.

Mac Steele Gymnasium was packed last week as local business people, teachers and students squared off in a game of basketball played on the back of donkey’s. All the seats were taken and spectators sat three to four deep around the court to watch the antics that raised money for a new high school football scoreboard.

The Osawatomie Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event, and director Shelagh Wright was thrilled with the turnout

“It couldn’t have happened without the support and cooperation of many many people” she said. “It was great to see the community come together for a common cause and just run with it. Great things can happen when we all work together.”

There was far more falling off the donkeys than riding during the night. Some of the highlights included baskets by Father Regie Saldanha, and three-point shots by Hunter Taylor in a game of students against teachers.

That game ended in a tie, which was broken through an arm wrestling match between superintendent Gary French and Taylor. French won the match and the school district team, called the Donkey Busters, advanced to the finals against the Holy Assets team.

Kathy Harrison reported that $7,536 in advance tickets were purchased and another $2,124 were sold at the door. In all the district pocketed $4,830 for the new scoreboard, about half of the total cost.
