Mayor Delivers for Nutrition Center

By Jeff Gulley

Osawatomie Mayor Phil Dudley was one of 1,500 mayors from Hawaii to Florida to deliver hot meals to seniors Wednesday as part of the Mayors On Wheels program.

The program, in its sixth year, aims to promote efforts being made to provide meals to the elderly.

“This is my fourth year participating in the Mayors for Meals program,” Dudley said. “It is a worthwhile program and I enjoy visiting with many of the residents that aren’t able to get out into the community as much. I look forward to participating in the program each and every year.”

Gina Dennis fights the battle every week day as the Osawatomie Senior Center’s nutrition site manager. The senior center meals, which come from Mid-America Nutrition’s main office in Ottawa, serve many people in town who do not have other options for meals.

“We serve about 40 meals a day,” she said. “What I really need are volunteers that can be on call. We rely on a lot of the same people every day and it would be nice if we have people that could fill in.”

Dennis said the 40 meals are broken down into three routes that take under an hour to run.

“I was very happy the mayor agreed to participate in the program,” Dennis said. “It shows that it’s important to participate.”
