Dudley Holds Off Write-In Bid For Mayor

A two-day effort to promote Gordon Schrader as a write-in candidate for Osawatomie mayor fell just over 23 votes short in the April 6 general election.
Incumbent mayor Philip Dudley received 206 votes and Schrader received 183 write-in votes. Write-in votes were also cast for four other people.
Patty Henness, one of the organizers of the write-in campaign, said she worked hard to convince Schrader to run.
“Gordon has been here for years and I thought he was the right choice,” Henness said. “We started going door-to-door and asking people if they would support Gordon for mayor and we had a good response.”
Henness said many of the people she talked to expressed concerns that their property values keep going down and the worry that their taxes will go up.
Dudley released a statement Monday saying he was disappointed that Schrader did not openly campaign for the position.
“Our community has a long history of fiery politics and this is just another chapter in our city’s history,” he said. “I am disappointed that my opponent chose this manner in which to run as I would have relished the opportunity to debate his ideas in a public forum and had the chance to make this about ideas and not about personalities or who likes or dislikes somebody.  I look forward to hearing my write-in opponents’ ideas and will give them fair consideration if it is in the best interest of our city.  It’s time for us as a community to stop with  this destructive behavior and the us against them mentality and begin to work together as Team Osawatomie, I know we can build a better community by working together.”
The city council will have two new faces at Thursday’s meeting.
Former city councilman John Klein narrowly defeated incumbent Larry Ratley 29-25 for the Ward 4 seat. There were five write-in votes also cast.
In Ward 3, Mark Govea received 136 votes to win the race against Richard Alonzo. Ted Hunter (Ward 1) and Mike Moon (Ward 2) ran unopposed and retained their positions.
USD 367 school board members Tammy Booe, D.J. Needham, Stanton Adams and Richard Fisher all ran unopposed and will remain on the school board.
