City To Honor Railroad History

By Jeff Gulley
The annual Railroad Day celebration is on track to deliver an entertaining day’s worth of activities as the community celebrates an important part of its heritage on April 24.
The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with the “Running the Rails for a Reason” 5K run/walk. The route begins and ends at the Osawatomie History Museum and Railroad Depot, 628 Main St.
Proceeds will benefit Tri-Ko Inc., a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with developmental disabilities.
Inside the museum and railroad depot, Kansas Railroad and other museums will set up information booths for the museum expo, which will feature model train layouts. The expo will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
An arts and crafts vendor fair will also take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. two blocks down the street at City Auditorium, 425 Main St.
Bring your lawn chairs and relax in the museum/railroad depot courtyard as you listen to a variety of musical entertainment.
Band of Oz will play pop and jazz music at 10 a.m., and OHS forensics students will perform at noon. Asylum Bridge plays at 1 p.m., followed by Scarecrow at 2 p.m.
Food vendors will be set up across from City Hall and the Osawatomie Fire Department will have a fire truck on display downtown.
Downtown merchants will have special sales and activities throughout the day and special tours of the John Brown Museum State Historic site will be available.
