Softball Team Tops Iola With Late Rally

By Jeff Gulley
After a disappointing double-header loss to Central Heights last week, the Osawatomie softball team got a big win Monday night over Iola.
Playing at Prairie View High School, the Trojans overcame a slow start to beat the Fillies 7-5, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory.
Iola struck first with a run in the first inning and remained 1-0 through the first four innings.
The Trojans had base runners in each of the first four innings but could not plate a run. Iola added a run in the top of the fifth but in the bottom of the inning Osawatomie broke their scoring drought.
Candice Firley started the inning and reached on a error. Tess Newport followed by reaching on an error and both moved up a base on a bunt attempt by Marley Murrow. Both would score in the inning along with Alyssa Drake, Britney Whitley and Tayla Richardson. The Trojans had a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth inning.
Iola quickly tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Newport reached on an error and scored on a single by Drake. Whitley then doubled in the second run of the inning narrowly missing a homerun.
Drake struck out the final two batters with two runners on in the top of the sixth for the win.
The victory came less than a week since the Trojans suffered two 12-2 losses at the hands of Central Heights in Pioneer League play. The Trojans played Wellsville Tuesday night and will play at Spring Hill Thursday.
The junior varsity team got its first win of the season in a 22-19 win over Prairie View.
