100 Years Ago

The Wilson-Brown Studio of this city is now locating a branch studio in Lane. The firm is now operating three well equipped studios in Osawatomie, Lane and Parker. The Osawatomie studio is headquarters and all the finishing for their branch studios will be done here.

The Lane Band entertained the people of Osawatomie who happened to be on the streets last Thursday evening and also played at the G. A. R. campfire and ball that evening. They are a fine looking organization of young men and furnish excellent music. They are typical of their little city which is growing so rapidly and assuming no mean porportions as a pretty town, and a trade center. Members are Fayne Lathen, Earl Lord, Charles Lathen, Russel McFadden, Berl Rush, Richard Loch, Sil Vinson, Loyd Grey and Roy Bowers.

 

75 Years Ago

The Missouri Pacific women’s club cooperating with the farm bureau women will hold their annual strawberry festival Thursday, May 14 the regular meeting day for the club.

Mrs. C. O. Fausett is dining room chairman and Mrs. D. E. Root is kitchen chairman. They will start serving strawberries and cream and homemade cake at one o’clock and after all are served the program will follow.

Mrs. W. D. McClintock entertained in honor of her daughter, Eleanora Jane’s eighth birthday, with a party Tuesday afternoon. The little guests played games with Patty Crowley winning the prize. Those present were Alladeen and Earleen Clearwater, Dorothy and Edna Ely, Frances Rouzee, Patty Crowley, Mary Jean King, Myra Lee Lundy, Norma Jean Hart, Doris May Hanfeld, Ann Walker, Carolee Tyrell, Randall, Barbara and Pricella Mullins and Donald McClintock.

Mrs. McClintock was assisted by Rosalie Rohrer, Alice McClintock and Mrs. Leslie McClintock.

A fire that caused a $600 loss at the Missouri Pacific shops and would have caused greater damage had it not been for the quick and efficient work of the Mo. Pacific and local firemen, started in the scrap hopper at the grain door plant Monday noon at 12:20.

 

50 Years Ago

R. Ellis Johnson, a native of Osawatomie who began his railroad career here 31 years ago as an assistant file clerk, Tuesday was elected president of the Rock Island Line.

The son of Mrs. L. M. Johnson, 533 Pacific St., Johnson was elevated to the top position from the executive vice-presidency by the board of directors following a meeting of stockholders.

Eta XI Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha held its meeting at the home of Carolyn Wilhoit. At the business session, election of new officers was held as follows:

President, Phyliss Henness; vice-president, Beverly Prather; secretary, Barbara Mathia; recording secretary, Dorothy Landry; and treasurer, Estella Pritchard.

The group voted to have a dinner at a steak house on May 20. Refreshments of chicken salad, hot rolls, and coffee were served to seven members.

Eight members of Xi Zeta Upsilon of Beta Sigma Phi attended a Founder’s Day dinner in the United Presbyterian Church of Paola Monday.

The chapter joined members of Paola chapters for the special observance.

Naomi Clifton spoke, using the topic of “history of Quilts.”

Osawatomie chapter members earning perfect attendance awards were Shirley Holt, Marilyn Winegar, Judy Keimig, Laura Gronemyer, Mary Kolosik and Ann Sinclair.

Mrs. Winegar was named recipient of the “Girl of the Year Award.” Susan Hiett made the presentation.

The Beagle Ding-a-ling Belles entertained the Osawatomie Court residents last Wednesday night. The entertainers were Ruth Sheldon, Mary Lou Cavinee, Wilma Stiffler, Grayce Diehm, Frances Radley, June Cook, Mildred Diehm, Natalie Bratton and Jean Nickell, director.

Attending were Lucille Palmer, Florence Heard, Eva Stanley, Esther Ringey, Ethel Smith, Virgil Ratlief, Raymond Hightower, Evelyn Johnson, Ruth Cockran, Ruth Clark, Anna Brown, Ralph Whitla, Max Ricketts, Clara McDougal, Georgia Stevenson, Susie Adams, Fred Whitney, Bertha Galloway, Hannah Gilchrist, Hazel Battersby, Irene Workman, Bill Skeens, Adolph Jergens, Lawrence Liebeno and Hazel Vaught.

LOUISBURG – Osawatomie had only two athletes earn medals in Thursday’s Louisburg Invitational Track Meet, but they did so in impressive fashion.

Tracey Holloman set a new meet record and bested her own personal record in the javelin with her throw of 132 feet, 7 inches. Holloman won the meet with a toss almost 26 feet longer than the second place throw.

“Holloman set the new record and she’s stacking up with the best of them,” Coach Rod Madden said.

Will Baxter placed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2.04.75. He also earned a fifth place finish in the 1600 meter run with his time of 4.51.3.

Osawatomie High School has announced the new cheerleaders for the 1996-97 school year.

Varsity cheerleaders for football are: April Allen, Kristy Barbosa, Jenny Dennis, Amy Johnson, Amanda Raabe, Laura Stephens, Lisa Torrez and Tracie Wendt.

Varsity basketball cheerleaders are: April Allen, Kristy Barbosa, Emily Dempsey, Jenny Dennis, Amy Johnson, Amanda Raabe, Laura Stephens and Lisa Torrez.

Junior varsity cheerleaders for football and basketball are: Rosann Blackmoore, Jennifer Bennett, Nikki Brown, Rushell Crosby, Tamika Hinton, Chellee Mansfield, Jessica Tevebaugh and Cristi Thompson.
