Trojans Stunned In Regionals

By Jeff Gulley

It was not supposed to end for Osawatomie on Monday.

Playing in the first round of the 4A baseball regional in Spring Hill, the Trojans were thinking about a state tournament bid. Instead they were upset 7-5 by a Prairie View team with only five wins on the season.

“Overall we were just outplayed,” coach Brett Woolery said. “Prairie View did a good job of keeping us off balance at the plate. They pitched six different guys at us, and it seemed to be pretty effective. We did have many opportunities to score runs however. We left the bases loaded in three different innings, once with nobody out in the 6th. It was just one of those games that we couldn’t get the big hit when we needed it. I didn’t think we had the focus we needed to have. For whatever reason we came out a little tight.”

The Trojans came into the game with only one loss on the season but made four errors in the first-round game.

Austin Chisam made the start and Woolery said he did a good job of getting ground balls early and throwing strikes but that the team did not make plays behind him. Brant Johnson relived him in the fifth and did not allow a run. Prairie View had only five hits in the game.

The loss ended one of the best baseball seasons in Osawatomie’s history. The team ended with a Pioneer League title and only two losses. Woolery said the team is trying to stay positive.

“I had a great time with this team,” he said. “I encouraged them at the end of the night that when they look back on this season they try to focus on the positives throughout the year, and not dwell on this one game. It will be tough however because I know how bad they wanted to make a run at the state tournament.”

In Tuesday’s games, Iola will play Spring Hill and Fort Scott plays Pairie View will play
