Train Derails, Closes 347th Street
By Jeff Gulley
Sixteen railroad cars derailed Saturday afternoon blocking the tracks on 347th Street near Lookout Road.
The Osawatomie Police and Fire Departments and the Miami County Sheriffs Department were called to the scene about 12:30 Saturday afternoon in response to calls about a loud explosion..
The last 22 cars on the 167-car train were affected but only 16 were thought to have left the track. Osawatomie Fire Chief Du Wayne Tewes said homeowners in the area were warned but no official evacuations were ordered.
Tewes said precautions were taken until they were sure that no fumes were being released in to the air.
The Union Pacific train, which was carrying among other things automobiles, caused the intersection to be blocked. The road was still closed as of Thursday morning.
No one was injured in the accident, which is still under investigation by the railroad.
PIE also is planning a follow-up sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 12, with such bargains as everything you can get into a paper sack for $3 and make-an-offer deals.
Families and organizations may register their own sales for only $7.50 for an individual sale or $10 for a multiple-family or group sale. The registration fee covers the cost of advertisements in local and surrounding newspapers. Participants will be given a sign to place at their sale locations to show they are part of the citywide event.
Donations of sale-quality household items will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday at the auditorium, 435 Main St.
Another perk of registering with PIE for the citywide sale is the benefit of being able to drop off at no charge any unsold sale items at City Auditorium from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. These leftover donations help boost the fundraiser. However, organizers no longer will accept leftover items on Saturday from any person or group not registered due to a lack of space and sorting time. Those who plan to drop off items must register prior to the weekend of the sale.
Donations from those not having personal sales will be accepted on Friday at City Auditorium. No broken or unusable household items, soiled clothing, batteries, paint, tires, waste and large appliances will be accepted.
Sale registration forms are available at Moon’s Hometown Market, Donna & Viola’s Shirts Etc. or from organizer Donna Eichorn. For more information about donating items, volunteering or registering, contact Eichorn at (913) 755-4962 or Samantha Branson of PIE at (913) 259-1101.
