Henry Lawrence Bachman

July 15, 1938 – July 15, 2011

Henry Lawrence Bachman, 73, Coats, Kan., a former Osawatomie resident, died Friday, July 15, 2011, in Pratt Regional Medical Center in Pratt, KS.

The son of Phillip and Mary Sharp Bachman, he was born July 15, 1938, in Kansas City, Mo. He was a 1957 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

He was a photographer in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1979.

In 1960 he and Connie O’Brien were married. She preceded him in death.

He later married Amy Phillips in 1971.

Mr. Bachman was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Those preceding him in death included a daughter Phyllis Hahn of Osawatomie; four sisters, Dorothy Bachman, Anne Marie Trumbly, Phyllis Henness and Gertrude Agnes Bachman; four brothers, Phillip Chester Bachman, Charles A. Bachman, George Bachman and Francis Bachman; and a grandson.

Survivors include two daughters, Erin Crouch of Coats and Brenda Bachman of Osawatomie; six brothers, Donald Trumbly, Joe Bachman, Jim Bachman, Bob Bachman, Sam Bachman and Tom Bachman; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pratt. Arrangements were cared for by Larrison Mortuary of Pratt. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church (Parish School of Religion) in care of the mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, KS 67124.

 

Francis Barbour Jr.

June 26, 1941 – July 30, 2011

Francis “Deas” Barbour Jr., 70, Paola, died Saturday, July 30, 2011, in Kansas City Hospice House after a brief illness with brain cancer.

The son of Francis Deas Barbour Sr. and Rebecca McCormick Barbour, he was born July 26, 1941, in Laurel, Miss. He lived in the South throughout his early years, moving annually with family due to his father’s work.

In 1959 he moved to Kansas City where he graduated from Bishop Miege High School. He was looking forward to his 50th class reunion in September.

In 1962 he joined the U.S. Marie Corps and served in the reserves four years.

He worked for Ford Motor Co. and Missouri Pacific Railroad, but his passion was farming and raising cattle which he did for the last 30 plus years.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Marilyn Barbour; two sons, Kevin Barbour of Paola and Kurt Barbour of Shawnee; two brothers, Dick Barbour of Leawood and Larry Barbour of Conway, Ga.; two sisters, Ginny Barbour Seagle of Alpharetta, Ga., and Ann Porter of Merrit Island, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 3, in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Paola. He was cremated. Arrangements were cared for by Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home of Paola.

John Raymond Earnest

March 11, 1942 – July 27, 2011

John Raymond Earnest, 69, Pleasanton, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, in Medicalodge in Fort Scott.

He was born March 11, 1942, in Weed, Calif., the son of John and Mary Earnest. He married Olive Reed and they became the parents of three children.

Mr. Earnest was self-employed as a welder and farmer.

Those preceding him in death included a sister Donna Thibodeu.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Earnest of Ottawa and John Earnest; two daughters, Carolyn Yoder of Welda and Sharon Earnest of Osawatomie; a brother, Charles Earnest of Pleasanton; one sister Bernice Salkeld of Rockport, Texas; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Earnest was cremated and private family services will be at a later date. Arrangements were cared for by Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home.

 

Marion Alleene Foster

Oct. 15, 1924 – July 26, 2011

Marion Alleene Foster, 86, Paola, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011.

The daughter of Roscoe and Ruth Strong Hess, she was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Iola. She was a graduate of Iola High School.

On May 9, 1942, she and Delmar Frederick Foster were married in Yates Center, Kan. They moved to Paola in 1952. Mr. Foster preceded her in death in 1989.

Mrs. Foster worked at Citizens State Bank and Miami County National/Team Bank until retiring.

She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed a number of pastimes, including golfing.

Survivors include three children, Vicki Robison and Randy Foster, both of Paola and Rick Foster of Shawnee; a sister Dorothy Wray of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were Friday in Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Paola Cemetery.

Memorials are to the Marion Foster Golf Scholarship in care of the funeral home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.

 

Olen W. Hampton

Dec. 7, 1917 – July 27, 2011

Olen W. Hampton, 93, La Cygne, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at his home.

Born Dec. 7, 1917, he was the son of Melville R. and Sarah Jane Sullivant Hampton. He grew up on the farm, attended local country schools and graduated from Parker Rural High School in 1936.

On June 12, 1938, he married his high school sweetheart, Muriel Crisler, in Livermore, Calif. After a brief time in California, they lived most of their 70 years of marriage in the Parker and La Cygne area. They were parents of four children. They also made a home for their niece and nephew, Carol and Don Woolever, after the death of their parents.

Mr. Hampton spent most of his life farming and raising cattle, which he loved to care for and simply watch.

He was a longtime member of the Christian Church, a member of the Independence Order of Odd Fellows Lodge for many years and a member of the Cadmus Grange for more than 50 years.

Those preceding him in death included his wife Muriel Hampton; four brothers, John Hampton, Lee Hampton, Rolla Hampton and Robert Hampton; and three sisters, Florence Page, Minta Hampton and Eva Page.

Survivors include his four children, Jerry O. Hampton, Deloris K. Coffin, Connie L. Eaton, all of La Cygne, and Vickie L. Eaton of Coal City, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and his niece and nephew, Carol Gardner and Don Woolever.

Services were Monday in the First Christian Church in La Cygne, followed by burial in Cadmus Cemetery.

Memorials are to his church in care of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, P.O. Box 308, La Cygne, KS 66064.

 

Virginia Pearl McDaniels

Nov. 4, 1924 – July 25, 2011

Virginia Pearl McDaniels, 86, Lee’s Summit, Mo., a former Parker area resident, died Monday, July 25, 2011, in John Knox Hospice House.

The daughter of Meade F. and Maude D. Harold, she was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Parker. She was a 1942 graduate of Parker Rural High School and continued to live in the Parker area until attending the University of Kansas for two years.

She worked for TWA, General Motors and Reese Morris Construction until she landed a position as claims examiner at the USMC 11th Finance Center from where she retired in 1989.

Those preceding her in death included a brother Ray F. Harold and a granddaughter.

Survivors include her son, Kem F. McDaniels; two daughters, Vicki C. Broski and Jo Lynn Carr; a brother, La Verne C. Harold of Falls Church, Va.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in the United Methodist Church of Parker. Burial was in Cadmus Cemetery.

Memorials are to Village Hospice House at John Knox Village.

Arrangements were cared for by Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW Third St., Lee’s Summit, MO 64063.

 

Joseph M. Savage

Feb. 11, 1936 – July 28, 2011

Joseph “Joe” M. Savage, 75, rural Paola, died Tuesday, July 28, 2011 at Olathe Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 11, 1936, in Billings, Mont., the son of Henry Matthew and Etta Jean Veal Savage.

Mr. Savage served his country with the U.S. Navy. He entered the military in 1953 and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserves in April of 1961.

He was united in marriage to Carmen Holden in 1958 at Columbus, Mont. They made their home in Billings before moving to Corvallis, Oregon and later Kansas City, Kan. They had living in rural Paola for 22 years.

Mr. Savage was an accountant for a newspaper company for 23 years. He then ventured out and purchased a small business, Olathe Cleaners, which he operated for seven years. After changing positions from accountant to owner, he and his wife Carmen became over-the-road drivers for eight years. After that he decided to retire and take care of their 11 acres.

He had many hobbies, including golfing, water skiing, bowling, playing computer games and country music, especially Hank Williams Sr.

Those preceding him in death included a brother Billy.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Carmen Savage. of the home; four children Constance Savage of Chevy Chase, Md., Cindy Carpenter of Gardner, Randy Savage of Lawrence and Christina Franklin of Shawnee; his sister Patricia Lennick of Las Vegas; his brother Jerry Savage of Massachusetts; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be Aug. 7 in Shawnee.

Memorials are to the Miami County Cancer Foundation.

 

Daisy Pearl Self

March 29, 1928 – July 27, 2011

Daisy Pearl Self, 83, Mound City, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, in her home.

She was born March 29, 1928, in Goodrich, the daughter of George and Julia Dinsmore Pearson.

On Aug. 18, 1945, she and Earl Self were married in Paola. He preceded her in death March 13, 2011.

Mrs. Self enjoyed quilting and loved animals.

Others preceding her in death included a daughter Barbara Morris; three brothers, Leonard Pearson, George Pearson and Julian Pearson, who died in infant; two half-brothers, Jerome Harris Pearson and Edwin Pearson; three sisters, Marie, Evelyn, Virginia; and two half-sisters, Eunice Lois and Effie Lea.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Self of Mound City and Charles Self of Parker; a daughter, Mary Simpson of Mound City; two siblings, Kenneth Pearson and Olive Farrell; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City. Burial was in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Mound City.

Memorials are to Southern Care Hospice in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box J, Mound City, KS 66056.

 

Robert Maurice
Van Goethem

Nov. 10, 1926 – July 27, 2011

Robert Maurice Van Goethem, 84, Louisburg, former rural Paola area resident, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011.

The son of Maurice and Martha Van Goethem, he was born Nov. 10, 1926, in Kansas City, Kan.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps and spent time on the USS Houston. He was honorably discharged.

He worked for a time for the Simmons Mattress Firm, but his desire was to serve his community. He joined the Prairie Village Police Department in 1962 where he served as a detective, both for the department and on the Metro Squad. He retired with the rank of sergeant in 1980.

After moving to the rural Paola area north of Osawatomie, he joined the Miami County Sheriff’s Department. He served the Miami County community as a detective, investigator and undersheriff before retiring in 1993.

Mr. Van Goethem, who went by “Bob”, was a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Louisburg, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.

In addition to his love for his family, he enjoyed the outdoors and his horses.

Those preceding him in death included a brother Albert Van Goethem and a grandson.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years Linda Van Goethem of Louisburg; three sons, David Van Goethem of Stilwell, Daniel Van Goethem of Kansas City, Kan., and Jeff Myers of new Braunfels, Texas; two daughters, Diane Armon of Fairway, Kan., and Jan Mundt of Sequin, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in his church, followed by burial in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Louisburg. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home of Louisburg cared for the arrangements.

Memorials are to St. Labra Indian School Educational Association, P.O. Box 216, Ashland, MT 59003-0216 or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Curtie Sue Trobough, 74, Lane, died Monday, July 29, 2011, in her home. Known as Sue, she was born July 2, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Robert Lee and Mildred Edith Walker Trobough. She worked for Tension Envelope Co. in Kansas City, Mo., before retiring. Among her survivors is a sister Margarett Cagley of Lane.
