USD 367 Students Get A’s On State Testing

Osawatomie schools received passing marks in the annual assessment report that was released last week.

District wide, all schools met annual yearly progress goals except Trojan Elementary, which failed to reach the mark in special education reading.

The district reading goal for 2010-2011 was 86 percent. Osawatomie students scored 88.3 percent. In math the mark was 82.3 percent and Osawatomie students were at 86.1 percent.

“We’re very happy with the results,” Susan Gorman, director of student improvement,  said. “Special education goals are getting harder to meet.”

Trojan Elementary failed to make AYP in math for special education. The reading goal was 87.8 percent and all students combined were at 87.9 percent. In math the mark was 86.7 percent. All students were at 85.8 percent with special education coming in at only 75 percent.

Middle school students in reading made the highest percentage. The goal to make was 87.8 percent and middle school students came in at 90.3 percent.

Target goals for AYP have risen from 2006 when the goal was 67.7 for K-8 reading, 69.9 for 9-12 reading, 62.5 for K-8 math and 50.9 for 9-12 math to the current standard in 2011 of 87.9 for K-8 reading, 88.7 for 9-12 reading, 85.9 for K-8 math and 81.6 for 9-12 math.

“If you would have asked me five years ago if we could make these numbers I would have doubted it,” Gorman said. “But we have been working hard each year and focusing on testing and its paying off.”

Things are going to change in two years as the state of Kansas is going to implement new tests. Gorman said school staff is still working on making progress on the old standards while trying to understand the changes that are coming.

Next year, the goal for K-8 reading will jump to 91.9 percent, 9-12 reading to 92.5, K-8 math to 90.6 and 9-12 math to 87.7 percent.
