City Council Confident In New City Manager

I had the pleasure to spend a few minutes talking with new city manager Don Cawby Monday afternoon.

Instantly I could see one of the reasons the city council liked him. He seems to be a positive man with a lot of knowledge about management. But more important, he knows and likes small towns.

Cawby is coming to a county where he has roots. He has family that lived in Fontana so he knows and likes this area.

His experience in towns like Pomona and Osage City and administrative experience in government agencies will serve him well in this new job.

I think, though, that the biggest positive that can be taken from this search is that Osawatomie city manager is a job people want to have. Over 25 resumes were submitted and the five candidates that were chosen for interviews were all good candidates according to the council.

As Cawby starts his work here, the problems he faces are far less than the ones Bret Glendening faced. The city is moving in the right direction. Are there still things that need to be done? Of course there are. And there are still problems that need to be tackled like the condition of Main Street for one.

But I commend the city council for its work in finding a new city manger quickly and efficiently.

The council worked together and came up with a man they all agreed could do the job. The interview process was thorough including tours of the city and not just the pretty parts. They took the candidates to all areas of town and showed them some of the challenges they face.

In the end I think we found the right man for the job and that’s the important part.

A special thanks needs to be given to Don Jordan who filled the role of the interim city manager and did a great job. He made informed decisions and worked with the council through the budget process which was no easy task.
