USD 367 Upgrades Football Helmets

Osawatomie football players will be better protected when the season starts thanks to the purchase of 40 new football helmets.

The USD 367 Board of Education voted in favor of purchasing 40 new Riddell helmets at its August meeting Wednesday night. Superintendent Gary French told the board that 10 new Rawlings helmets had already been purchased but after reading an study done by Virginia Tech, the district should return the Rawlings helmets and purchase 40 Riddell helmets.

“The study ranked helmets with a safety rating,” he said. “We had 10 Riddell helmets with a four star rating already and many Adams helmets that were rated no stars. The Rawlings were not included in the study.”

Football practice started Monday with the old helmets but French said they would be here by the first game of the season.

In other news the board:

Voted 6-1 to approve the 2011-2012 budget. Richard Fisher cast the no vote.

Heard a report that enrollment numbers are down 10 to 15 students from last year but weighted factors like free and reduced lunch students are up. Final enrollment numbers will be counted on Sept. 20.
