Osawatomie Runners Set High Goals For 2011
By Jeff Gulley
With a lot of experience returning to the boys’ cross country team, coach Matt Higgins has high hopes of some top finishes late in the year at league and regionals.
With goals set high, Higgins hopes that success this year will help build the program.
“We would like to place in the top two at league and top four at regionals,” Higgins said. “We would like to win two meets this year. We have a goal of staying together and building a core of runners that enjoy running and make this a life long passion.”
Higgins expects to have five or six varsity runners on the boys’ team with Austin Hall, Chance Jolly and Jerrod Bechtel moving up from the JV squad. Grant Maimer, Devon Dozier and Nick Lewis are back for the varsity team this year.
Mercedes Smith and Cheyenne Williams are the only two girls returning with experience.
But new runners like Megan Higdon, Jillian Marcum and Audry Wilson should help. Higgins is excited about freshmen Bailey Poage and Andy Cornelius as well.
The cross country team starts its season Sept. 1 at Anderson County.
The league meet will be at Prairie View on Oct. 13 with regionals set for Oct. 22.
