Griffiths Unite To Fight Cancer

Wearing grey shirts with PEACE – LOVE – CURE in pink letters, with blue lettering for the guys, and ‘TEAM GRIFFITH – UNITE FOR THE FIGHT”, members of the extended Griffith family walked in the Susan G. Komen Cancer Walk on Aug. 8.

Forty-two members of the family, ranging in age from 6 months to 65 years of age, participated in the event, remembering especially the 11 names of loved ones who had fought cancer emblazoned on the back of their shirts.

Not only were they joining hands for a good cause, but they had reason to celebrate. Jim Minden was diagnosed March 2009 with bladder cancer. Three surgeries and two BCG treatments later, he was told Nov. 19, 2009, that he was in remission – the cancer was gone.

Janie Griffith Minden found out on Nov. 13, 2009, that she had breast cancer. After surgery, 16 chemo treatments and 33 radiation treatments which she finished Aug. 6, she, too, was told she was cancer free.

In celebrating their birthdays – Janie on Aug. 8 and Jim on Aug. 10 – the family gathered for the walk, which departed from Union Station.

Since it was Janie’s birthday and a cancer survivor, an advertiser for Price Chopper gave the Mindens’ story on stage at the beginning of the walk.
