Trojan Volleyball Team Goes 4-1 For The Week

By Jeff Gulley

The Osawatomie varsity volleyball team went 2-1 in pool play at West Franklin Saturday but the winning record was not good enough to get them into bracket play.

Osawatomie beat Central Heights and Royal Valley but lost to Burlingame in Saturday’s tournament.

“I thought at times we played really well but at other times made too many mistakes at critical times,” coach Darren Soucie said. “We have a goal of touching every ball that lands in and we are just not doing that enough. I would rather us get a hand on it instead of doubting ourselves; we just need more drilling on that. Our serving was pretty good but we are still making too many service errors. To be a good team you have to cut down on your error and force other teams to make errors.”

Osawatomie beat Central Heights 18-25, 25-20, 25-9 in the first match. Tayler Soucie had 14 kills and nine blocks in the match. Tess Newport had 19 assists. Kaylee Hurt had five aces.

The Trojans’ loss came in a 25-22, 25-22 match against Burlingame in the second match of the tournament. Soucie had 15 kills and Newport had 15 assists.

In the final match the Trojans won 25-19, 25-12 over Royal Valley. Soucie had nine kills and Rebecca Fisher had five. Newport had 12 assists.

“I know we were disappointed not to make it out of pool play even though we were 2-1 but that is what it is,” Soucie said. “There is only one team to blame. We need to step it up.”

Osawatomie got two league wins Sept. 20 at home over Anderson County and Prairie View.

The Trojans beat the Bulldogs 26-24, 25-15. Soucie had two kills and Newport had 12 assists. Hurt, Suzy Waddle and Soucie each had two aces.

The Trojans beat Prairie View 25-8, 25-17 in the second match. Soucie had five kills and Waddle had three. Newport had seven assists. Hurt had four aces.

“I thought we as a team are serving and receiving serves a lot better,” Soucie said.“ Jordan (Nichols), Kaylee (Hurt), Kandice (Firley), Suzy (Waddle) and Tayler (Soucie) all recorded aces during the night. Tess (Newport) really made some nice sets and is improving on her technique. Marley (Murrow) was really hustling in the back row trying to get a dig. We are working hard in practice to see what our strengths are so we can use them in a game. I really like this group of girls; they are coming together as a team and learning that everyone has to have each other’s back. They are starting to support each other better and accepting their role so our team is at its best.”

The Trojans play a tournament at Central Heights on Oct. 15 before playing in substate Oct. 22.
