Trojans Fall In District Play

By Jeff Gulley

Brandon Oakes was helped off the field in the final minutes of the Paola-Osawatomie football game Friday night.

Oakes turned in one of the gustiest performance of the year running for 158 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

Heading into the matchup against Paola Friday night, the Osawatomie Trojans were short on players and coming off a stinging loss against Central Heights.

And while the final score of 62-18 showed a dominating performance by the Panthers, what is not in the scorebook is the heart that the Trojans showed in defeat.

Oakes got the Osawatomie visiting fans excited on the opening kickoff. The ball was bobbled by Oakes, who then picked it up and raced 91 yards for a touchdown.

On the second Osawatomie possession, sophomore Cole Rayl was hit in the head trying to catch a pass and was taken off the field on a stretcher. He spent the rest of the evening in the hospital with concussion symptoms. Rayl’s helmet was knocked off his head on the play which was not ruled a personal foul by the officials.

Paola answered, scoring three times in the first quarter and again in the second quarter to lead 27-6.

But Oakes again would spark the Trojans. He broke free from two Panther tacklers and raced 30 yards for a touchdown and the score was 27-12.

Osawatomie had the momentum but the Panthers would score three more times before the end of the half to lead 48-12.

Paola scored two more times in the third quarter and led 62-12.

In the fourth, Matt Lofing scored on a 29-yard run for the final Osawatomie touchdown of the game.

Besides the injury to Rayl, receiver Josh Criddle also left the game with a shoulder injury leaving only five Osawatomie subs available on the sidelines.

Lofing rushed for 84 yards on 22 carries. The third leading rusher for Osawatomie was DJ Hollman who had one carry for nine yards.

Caleb Lofing led the defense with eight tackles and Zak Higgins had seven.

The Trojans continue district play Friday night at home against Louisburg. It’s the final home game of the season.
