Earning A Boy Scout’s Highest Honor

Riley McDougal earned the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve as he officially became an Eagle Scout on Saturday.

Family, friends and fellow scouts from troop 106 gathered at the Beagle Methodist Church to honor McDougal, a freshman at Washburn University.

“I appreciate all of you being here today,” McDougal told the crowd. “You have made a big difference in my life and have helped me achieve this rank of Eagle Scout.”

McDougal began scouting in 1999 as a cub scout in Ottawa, Kan. and moved up to the Boy Scouts in troop 139 in Burlington, Kan. In 2004 he joined troop 106 in Osawatomie and has attended numerous camps including the Seabase High Adventure Camp in Florida in 2007.

For his Eagle Scout project, McDougal created a prayer garden at the Beagle United Methodist Church.

During the ceremony Jeff Walmann, who serves as the Twin Rivers District Committee Chairperson and is an Eagle Scout, gave McDougal his Eagle Scout charge and troop 106 assistant scoutmaster gave a reading about the meaning of scouting.

Then after receiving his Eagle Scout pin and giving his mother and father pins, McDougal called up OHS teacher Charles Baker and presented him with a mentor medal.

“You taught me who I truly was,” McDougal said.
