Adventures in clothing shopping, Osawatomie-style

By Sarah Dorsett

I spent a couple of days over the past two weeks discovering what body coverings were available in Osawatomie.

I checked out all the flea markets, secondhand stores and dollar stores. The basics are here at the dollar stores: underwear and socks, for sure. All sizes that my family needs. I found two decent long sleeve T-shirts for myself, perfect for slacks, at one of our dollar stores.

Oh, a note about me and clothes: I am no fashionista for sure. Most of the time, I like to dress as if I am ready to go on a hike on the rail trail west of town. If someone asks me to go rock climbing out of the blue, or if my boys want to play catch in the backyard, I want to be ready. And I have no problem with secondhand clothes and other items for myself or my family.

The flea markets here range from junky attics/garage sale leftovers to very, very nice secondhand items.

I found a unique denim vest for myself at a flea market, very cheap, very clean, looks great. I realize I might run into the original owner sometime, but you know what, life is too short to be uncomfortable with that kind of thing.

There is a woman’s clothing store of fine, long standing reputation here that needs no endorsement from the likes of me. Many women have shopped there for years, the service is excellent, the prices are great. They have helped me get ready for some dressier events in the past. Found a faux leather jacket on sale, an item I have been eyeing in catalogs for several years.

The shoe selection in Osawatomie for just about anyone is not good. Just my opinion, I realize.

A side note: Anyone else still have a VHS player? I was most pleased to find $1 VHS movies at the flea markets. There are a lot of movies, especially on VHS, for about a buck, and they are movies I just want to see once again, and then I’ll either throw or give away. There are tons of good children’s movies at every flea market. A used VHS tape is more reliable than the scratched up used DVDs.

The bottom line is: don’t pass judgment on what is here unless you have looked seriously yourself. And I have been guilty of passing judgment without checking out the facts.

Don’t take my word for it, get your boots on the ground and walk the new downtown, and actually enter and examine what is in these stores!

My best find? I found an old friend and we spent the better part of an hour hanging out together on a nice Saturday afternoon, checking out the flea markets. Thanks, Tammy Walmann, for being that good friend!
