Council Awards The Journal Official City Newspaper Status
At its meeting Thursday night, the Osawatomie City Council voted to designate the Osawatomie Journal as the official city newspaper. As such, the Journal will publish the city’s legals, which include items such as ordinances, resolutions and the annual city budget.
The Journal was the low bidder at 55 cents per line. The Osawatomie Graphic, which had been the official paper, bid 80 cents per line.
The council vote was 6-1-1 in favor of the Journal.
Councilman Mike Moon abstained from the discussion and the vote because he provided some of the initial capital to start the Journal, but he has no ownership stake in the newspaper.
Councilman Larry Ratley voted no, because he wanted to award co-official paper status to both the Journal and the Graphic. Ratley said he wanted to see both papers prosper.
Other council members countered it would be cost prohibitive to publish legals in both newspapers.
Last year, the city spent around $25,000 on advertising, including legals.
