Jones Tosses 7 TD Passes
By Jeff Gulley
It was the breakout game the Trojans have been looking for all season.
Osawatomie erased a season of frustrating losses, winning on the road at Central Heights Friday night 44-20 behind a stellar performance by senior quarterback Seth Jones.
Jones tossed seven touchdown passes throwing for 337 yards and was also the leading rusher with 108 yards. He also intercepted two passes.
The Trojans made no effort to hide the fact that they wanted to pass the ball working out of a five receiver, no runningback set most of the night.
In the first quarter, it appeared to be one of those games that whoever touched the ball last would win. Osawatomie scored first on a 32-yard pass to Brandon Oakes. Kody Medina attempted the extra point for the first time this season but was off the mark. The 6-0 lead was Osawatomie’s first of the season.
The Vikings answered back on a 76-yard run by Dalton Schwab. The extra point gave the home team a 7-6 advantage.
It was the Trojans turn then to make a big play. Jones connected with Austin Chisam for a 40-yard touchdown pass and Osawatomie was back on top 12-7.
Central Heights had another answer as Schwab scored from 21-yards out to give the Vikings a 14-12 lead.
Then as time was running out in the first quarter, Chisam caught a second touchdown pass, this one for 47 yards and the Trojans led 18-14 at the end of the quarter.
From there the Osawatomie defense stiffened up and did not allow another Viking score until late in the fourth quarter.
Oakes caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give the Trojans a 24-14 lead at the half.
Leading by only 10 points as the third quarter began, Osawatomie broke the game open with two more passing touchdowns. Oakes caught a 7-yard pass and Drew Needham caught a 20-yard pass.
Jones’ only mistake of the game came in the fourth quarter when he threw an interception that was taken back for a touchdown. He capped his night in the fourth quarter with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Oakes.
Jones rushed 13 times for 108 yards catching the spread out Viking defense by surprise. Needham was second in rushing with 27 yards.
Chisam was the leading receiver with five catches for 131 yards. Oakes caught nine passes for 118 yards.
Brant Johnson led the team with 13 tackles. Dustin Doherty had a quarterback sack.
Osawatomie begins district play Friday night playing host to rival Paola.
