100 Years Ago

2500 employees on the Missouri Pacific and Iron Mountain System were ordered out on strike today at noon. The news came by Associated Press and the courtesy of the Kansas City Star at 1 o’clock. The men who are out on this last order are boilermakers, blacksmiths, coppersmiths and sheetmetal workers.

About forty young people of the Presbyterian church were entertained Friday evening by the Christian Endeavor Society at the home of Miss Grace Root. A short business meeting was held, after which various amusing games were played. Light refreshments were served.

Fred Conklin, H. S. Maynard, C. L. Carrico, C. C. Clevenger and Joe Chamberlain drove out to the town ship hall in Richland township last Wednesday evening to attend a meeting of the republican voters of that township. They had a good meeting and a mighty interesting trip.

We have stopped at H. K. Godding’s cider mill several times recently to sample his stock and always find him busy turning out a very appetizing, tasty drink. A great many wagon loads of apples are being worked up into cider. There ought to be lots of good country apple butter made in the territory tributary to this mill this year.

75 Years Ago

Thursday, Oct. 24, will be the seventieth anniversary celebration of the local Masonic lodge and four fifty year members will be honored. The four who have been members for fifty years or more are: Howard H. Coombs, Pueblo, Colo.; Alex H. Hume, Clebourne, Texas; John D. Post, Osawatomie, and Wm. H. Campbell, Osawatomie. These men will be presented with gold buttons by the Grand Lodge.

Several distinguished guests will be here for the celebration including Otto R. Souders, Grand Master, Wichita; Elmer F. Strain, Grand Secretary, Topeka; Dr. Claude Young, Grand Senior Deacon, Fort Scott; D. Clarke Kelley, Kansas City, Kansas, and Charles W. Williams, Fort Scott.

There will be a dinner at 6:15 for the Masons and a program at 8:00 for the Masons and their families.

Results of the aptitude tests which were given to 615 freshmen who entered Emporia Teachers College for the present semester were compiled this week and those who were included in the highest ten per cent or “tenth decile” were named by Dr. H.E. Schrammel, director of the Bureau of Measurement. Donald Moler, Osawatomie, was among those who ranked high.

50 Years Ago

Earnest Workers Class of the First Baptist Church met at the home of Mrs. Pearl Galbraith for a one o’clock luncheon last Tuesday, Oct. 4. Fourteen members enjoyed pumpkin pie with whipped cream which was served from tables beautifully decorated with fall flowers.

Mrs. Roy Bowers led the devotions, using as her subject, “What We Pray For.” Assisting hostesses were Mrs. Nellie Sherman and Mrs. Pheba Davis.

Others present were: Lucy Martin, Mrs. Zumbrun, Mildred Maxwell, Mrs. Burke, Nellie Chambers, Mrs. Ben Barnett, Hazel Piggott, May Turner, Lillian Scott, Mrs. Eichorn, Mamie Sherman, Miss Virginia Hawkins, Mrs. Edwards and Rev. and Mrs. Wheatley.

Veterans of World War I will form an organization to be known as the “Osage Valley Barracks of World War I Vets” at a meeting to be held at 7:15 p.m. Friday in Room 1 of the City Auditorium.

“Bye, Bye, Birdie” is this year’s fall musical. It was chosen this summer by Mr. Tom Martin, the director, and Mr. Tim Ricketts, the music director.

The play will be performed Thursday and Friday, November 14 and 15. The cast was chosen September 13. Reserve tickets will be available two weeks before the show.

The cast is as follows: Albert, Darrin Ashmore; Rose, Heather Higgins; Kim, Beth Stout; Ursula, Rae Ann Crumply; Mr. MacAfee, Kevin Higgins; Mrs. MacAfee, Jodie Kitchen; Conrad, Scott Beumer; Hugo, Eric Thompson; Randolph, Chris Baker; and Mae Peterson, Ruth Sheldon.

Teenagers (chorus): Nancy, Trisha Attebery; Margie, Tanya Tate; Alice, Shelly Anderson; Penelope, Jeanne Mullins; Harold, David Whetstone; Karl, Greg Branson; Harvey, Silas Ashmore; Henry, William Shotten; and Gloria Rasputin, Suzanne Lindsey.

Others: Michelle Tyrell, Steven Tyrell, Marcie Burgoon, Doug Irwin and Dan Irwin.

A drive to preserve the historic Adair Cabin in John Brown State Park took a major step forward Tuesday night when a board of directors was elected by about 25 people. An organizational meeting was held at the Osawatomie Senior Center.

Elected to the board were: Lorene Hydorn, Jacci Stewart, LueAnn Hellyer, Harry Hellyer, Bill Manning, Neil Shepherd and Gary Barge.

That group will complete the organization of Friends of Adair Cabin Inc. as well as select officers to help manage the facility and its programs.

The cabin, often referred to as “John Brown’s Cabin,” was owned by the Rev. and Mrs. Samuel Adair. He was the first chaplain at the Osawatomie State Hospital.

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Marine Pvt. Christina I. Ward, daughter of Debbie I. and Dennis D. Ward, 12,150 West 287th St., Paola, Kan., has completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot here.

The 1995 graduate of Paola High completed 11 weeks of training that is designed to challenge new Marine recruits mentally and physically. A total of 41,000 men and women will enter the corps this year.
