School District Enrollment Dips Slightly On First Day Of Classes

Osawatomie USD 367 enrollment was down more than 20 students on the first day of classes Monday.
But that figure is likely to change before the official enrollment count for the state is taken on Sept. 20.
“These numbers are tentative. We anticipate growing a little more. We hear there were some more students coming, so we think the gap will close,” Superintendent Gary French said Tuesday morning.
Seventy-four kindergartners were enrolled at Swenson Early Childhood Center, down from 88 last year.
“We think our kindergarten enrollment will increase,” French said. “If we have any 5 year olds in our preschool, and that’s certainly possible, the state counts those kids as kindergartners. We haven’t added those students into the count yet.”
Trojan Elementary School’s enrollment was 401 students, down from 425 students last year.
Osawatomie Middle School’s enrollment was 285 students, up a dozen students from last year’s 273 count.
“We anticipated Trojan’s count being down and the middle school being up,” French said, “because we had a smaller kindergarten class coming into Trojan (as first graders) and a larger fifth grade class (from last year) going into the middle school.”
Enrollment also was up at Osawatomie High School with 356 students, compared to 344 last year.
District-wide enrollment Monday was 1,116 students, down from last year’s official count of 1,130 students.
“The numbers are very tentative right now. Historically, things tend to settle down after Labor Day, and we’ll have a better idea of what our enrollment will be,” French said. “Bottom line, I anticipate we’ll be down about 10 to 15 students.”
