Final Game Is Memorable
By Jeff Gulley
The numbers are staggering – 1,510 yards of total offense, 818 rushing yards by one team and 505 passing yards by another. And then there was that final score.
Spring Hill won the final football game of the season against Osawatomie by a staggering score of 99-72.
It was a game where Osawatomie could not stop the Bronco rushing attack and the Broncos did not have an answer for the Trojans’ passing game.
“Never in my life have I been part of a game like that,” Osawatomie coach Clint Bailey said. “I don’t know exactly how to explain it other than we didn’t tackle. When we had them wrapped up, they got away and scored.”
The game got off to a great start for Osawatomie. On the first play from scrimmage, Seth Jones tossed a pass to Brandon Oakes. The ball was tipped by Spring Hill but Oakes was able to catch it and raced 59 yards for a touchdown.
Two-point conversions would be key in the game. After the first score, Jones connected with Oakes for the conversion and Osawatomie led 8-0.
But the Broncos drove quickly on the next series and scored on a 25-yard run. The conversion was good and the game was tied 8-8.
Osawatomie took the ball back and Jones raced for a 44-yard touchdown and then hit Allen Raymer for the 2-point conversion making the score 16-0.
Spring Hill answered with a 15-yard touchdown run and the conversion was good making it 16-16.
Then the Broncos got the first stop of the game recovering an Osawatomie fumble in Trojan territory. They capitalized scoring on an 18-yard run and the conversion made the score 24-16.
Jones connected with Chisam during the next drive for a 64-yard touchdown pass and then hit Oakes for the conversion and the Trojans were back even at 24-24.
Spring Hill then scored on a 65-yard run to pull ahead 32-24 but Jones answered with a 45-yard run as the first quarter was coming to an end. The Osawatomie conversion attempt failed for the first time and the first quarter score remained 32-30.
Spring Hill had the ball to start the second quarter and put together a long drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown run. This time the Trojan defense held on the conversion attempt and Spring Hill’s lead was 38-30.
Jones then connected with Chisam for a 27-yard pass and went to Chisam again for the conversion to tied the score 38-38.
The teams would trade touchdowns again in the quarter. Spring Hill kept the ball and took some time off the slow-moving clock capping a drive with an 18-yard run. The conversion made the score 46-38.
Osawatomie answered with a quick 64-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Oakes. The conversion pass was no good and Spring Hill led 46-44 at halftime.
The Broncos would score the first two times in the third quarter to lead 62-44.
But Jones brought the Trojans back with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Chisam, but the Trojans could not make the conversion and trailed 62-50.
Spring Hill scored again to lead 70-50 but Osawatomie stayed within striking distance with a 12-yard pass from Jones to Oakes to start the fourth quarter. The conversion pass failed making the score 70-56. Spring Hill scored again to take a commanding 78-56 lead.
It looked at that point like the Broncos had the game under control but Jones had other ideas. He hit Oakes for a 55-yard pass and then went to Oakes again for the conversion to make the score 78-64.
On the next snap, the Broncos went 55-yards for a touchdown to lead 86-64.
Oakes then caught a Jones pass and looked to be breaking free but fumbled the ball, setting up a 22-yard Bronco touchdown. Spring Hill tried a conversion kick that failed and led 92-64.
The Trojans had one more big play left. Oakes caught a 65-yard touchdown pass and Dustin Doherty caught the conversion pass to make the score 92-72.
Spring Hill scored the final touchdown on a 16-yard run and he kicked the extra point to make the final 99-72.
The final numbers were staggering. Jones passed for 505 yards and threw eight touchdown passes. He also was the leading rusher with 184 yards on nine carries.
Oakes ended the game with seven passes for 275 yards and had five touchdowns. Chisam caught six passes for 157 yards.
Spring Hill rushed for 818 yards and had only two passing yards.
Brant Johnson had 16 tackles, Mitch Talley had 15 and Caleb Lofing had 13.
The Trojans’ season ended with a 1-8 record.
