Sonic Raises $6,000 For Breast Cancer

By Jeff Gulley

Thanks to an anonymous late-night donor, the Osawatomie’s Sonic-Drive In topped $6,000 for Breast Cancer Research in October.

The annual fundraiser was a huge success this year according to Sonic manager Gary Elmquist.

“Don’t let anyone tell you this town doesn’t care,” he said. “It was just a phenomenal month.”

The final tally came to $6,003.25. Elmquist said they were just under $6,000 but on the final day, he woke to find a check in his mailbox. The amount nearly doubled the amount raised in previous years.

During the month of October, customers were asked to add .25 cents to their order for the Breast Cancer fundraiser.

A golf tournament was also held in October that featured a silent auction with all the funds going toward the project.

Elmquist gave a lot of the credit for the success of the fundraiser to Joan Vanderburgh.

“She was phenomenal,” he said. “She planned the survivors car hop day and helped in the golf tournament.”

Elmquist was overcome with emotion when talking about the final tally. He thanked all those who participated and said plans are already being made for next year’s event.
