Eighth-Graders Get Win Over Jayhawks

The Osawatomie Middle School eighth-grade girls got past Jayhawk-Linn for the first basketball win of the season Thursday night.

Mariah Guilfoyle scored nine points and Makayla Pope scored eight points to lead the Trojans to a 22-11 victory.

Guilfoyle helped Osawatomie out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter. Guilfoyle hit a 3-point shot and scored again the first quarter to account for all five points.

Pope the score five points in the second quarter and Larissa Thompson added a point on a free throw and the Trojans led 11-5 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Osawatomie was held to only three points, two by Gulfoyle and one by Pope but the Jayhawks only scored two points and Osawatomie still led 14-7 as the fourth quarter began.

Pope then scored four with Guilfoyle and Saige Weaver each adding two points.

Other members of the varsity team are Daphne Lofing, Keonna Goodwin, Samatha Inscore and Larissa Harrison.

The seventh-grade team is still looking for its first win of the season after falling to the Jayhawks 35-8.

All of the Trojans’ scoring came in the second quarter. Kelcey Wendt scored four points with Madilyn Gordon and Jessie Beets each adding two points.

Other members of the seventh-grade varsity team are Hailey Upshaw, Zealia Kleitz, Meagan Roth, Laura Gulley, Josie Jones and Amia Schultz.

Both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams will compete in the league tournament this week at Burlington. Games will be played Thursday night and Saturday.
