Library Grant Application Put On Hold

By Jeff Gulley

The Osawatomie Library has pushed back the application for a Community Block Development Grant to next fall.

Osawatomie librarian Elizabeth Trigg said timing constraints led to the delay on the grant, which would make it possible to move forward with phase two of the renovations project.

While having to delay the implementation of phase II is disappointing I believe that everything happens for a reason and this extra time will give our community the opportunity to enjoy our new library as well as allow the city and the library board a chance to hone and improve the plans for the next phase,” Trigg said.

Phase two of the expansion project includes enlargement of the library, additional programs for adults, youth and family, a John Brown/Kansas History room and reading and public meeting rooms. An open house for phase one was held on Nov. 7. Phase one included ADA improvement like and elevator and enlarging the children and youth department.

Trigg said Donna Crawford from the Governmental Assistance Services, who was writing the grant, suggested that the grant be put on hold for this year.

Grants are awarded on a points system. Points are awarded for need, matching funds and readiness and Trigg said phase one took longer to complete than anticipated and some of the criteria for readiness were not met.

She said the library is still planning on applying and that the delay may actually help in obtaining the grant next year.

“ We will submit the application in the fall of 2011,” she said. “This extra time will allow us to refine the existing plans for the expansion and continue to raise matching funds.”

The Library met it’s goal of raising 25 percent for matching funds which was $100,000. Trigg said points are awarded based on the percentage of matching funds raised so increasing that percentage would help the cause.
