Flood Zone Display Showcases Deep Pockets’ Trophy

By Kevin Gray

After having won a third-place trophy at the American Poolplayers Association 2010 Tournament in Las Vegas back in August, the team members were not sure what to do with the trophy. Having been a team effort, no one person could take the trophy home with them.

The best alternative, said Flood Zone owner Tony Savage, was to keep it where they play pool and practice. “This was a huge accomplishment for these guys, so they decided to keep it here at the Flood Zone, where they started winning local tournaments, which led to Vegas,” Tony said.

Team captain Ernie Marmon said they want to go back to Vegas. But for now, they are proud to have their trophy on display at the Flood Zone. Team members, who returned from Las Vegas with the trophy, were Chris Wilson, Nick Hampson, Dan Feuerborn, Dave Feuerborn, Justin Roberts, Troy Rockers and Marmon.

It took team member, Chris Wilson, and the help of Wilson’s father-in-law, Curtis Wycoff, to begin building the case. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of Curtis. It was a lot of hard work, but Curtis has all the woodworking tools and has been working with wood for forever,” Wilson said.

Their effort took them about a month and a half. “Curtis and I had the idea for what we wanted the cabinet to look like. But we would knock ideas back and forth until we got started,” Wilson said.

Each team member pitched in once Wilson and Wycoff had the cabinet shaped up. “Ernie did the staining, Nick the electrical work, and everybody did other little things and helped with the installation,” Wilson said.

As for their dream to return to Las Vegas and return with a higher place trophy, Wilson said their new trophy case would not work. “The second-place trophy is 6 inches taller than the third and the first-place trophy a full foot taller. So we would have to build another case,” Wilson said.

Savage felt the addition of the trophy case will draw a lot of attention from his customers. “This trophy could also make other pool teams really strive harder. If a team from Osawatomie can go to Vegas and return with the prize, then they can, too,” Savage said.
