Resolved to Read Tags

By Beth Gulley

The trick to crafting a good New Year’s resolution lies in breaking your larger goals down into their smallest components, and then choosing the right qualifier to go along with them. For example, I like to shop at garage sales and thrift stores, but I don’t have the desire or opportunity to try clothes on in those environments. Often I come home with clothes that are a great color but too big or too small for me. This year one of my resolutions is to stop buying clothes that don’t fit me. However, I may have trouble achieving this goal in its current state because sometimes I can’t try on clothes before I buy them, so while they may be my “size” they don’t actually fit. Also, clothes sometimes shrink in the wash, so I may end up with ill-fitting clothes even though I tried them on in the store. So to make my goal of only buying clothes that fit me more achievable, I need to look at the steps I need to take to achieve this, and then work on the first one. A better resolution for me might be to read the size tags in clothes before I buy them, and then mostly buy clothes whose size tags say they fit me. This is something I can control and still something I need to work on, so it makes a good goal for me. Notice also the qualifier “mostly” which makes room for exceptions. Then if I choose to buy something that doesn’t have a size tag or that is clearly incorrectly sized, then I have a loop-hole, and I will not fail to keep my resolution. While this goal may seem silly, I really need to work on it, and achieving it will improve my life in 2011.

My hope for you in 2011 is that you set small attainable resolutions that make your life happier, not ones that make you feel defeated. For example, instead of trying to lose 20 pounds, why not resolve to invite a friend for a walk sometimes, or resolve to join a volleyball league for one session. Instead of resolving to go on a diet, maybe resolve to try a few new vegetables, or resolve to drink water with meals more often than you do now. Instead of resolving to be more organized, resolve to post a large calendar on the wall, or resolve to take one bag of old clothes to the thrift store. Then I will have more items to sift through while I am looking at size tags.
