Kansas Day Celebration
Residents are urged to come celebrate Osawatomie’s history and culture as the community marks Kansas Day on Jan. 30 at Osawatomie High School.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the west end of the high school, 1200 Trojan Drive.
An Arts and Crafts Vendor Fair will showcase the talents of artists and crafters from the area. DAR Marais des Cygnes Chapter member Pamela Hennigh will also demonstrate butter making and talk about other aspects of pioneer life.
The celebration will feature a carnival that includes face painting and the games Kansas Jeopardy, the Price is Right 1850s style, family tree, flying darts, a three-legged race, ring toss, and floating ducks. The carnival’s cakewalk will benefit the John Brown Museum Educational Garden.
Carnival goers can win tickets by playing the games, and a drawing will take place for prizes donated by Osawatomie businesses, including the grand prize Sony digital camera from Radio Shack.
In addition, Trojan Elementary third-graders’ Kansas Day floats will be on display and various musical groups will perform in the high school cafeteria.
The Band of Oz will perform pop and jazz music at 10 a.m., followed by Osawatomie High School’s vocal music group and Kristi Baker’s piano students at 11 a.m. OHS forensics students will perform at noon, and the Twin Rivers Jazz Band will play Dixieland jazz at 1 p.m. Asylum Bridge will round out the musical entertainment at 2 p.m. with their pop and folk music.
Organizer Grady Atwater said the Kansas Day celebration will offer something for the entire family.
“We are blessed with a lot of great local musical talent, and the carnival should be fun,” Atwater said.
The celebration also will provide a great opportunity to learn about the community’s history and heritage in a fun atmosphere, Atwater said.
“I urge everyone to come and enjoy the celebration.”
