Moon Speaks On Grocery Bill
By Jeff Gulley
Local grocery owner Mike Moon is spending a lot of time in Topeka these days speaking in favor of a bill that would allow grocery and convenience stores to sell beer, wine and liquor.
Moon will speak Wednesday to the Senate State and Federal Affairs Committee about the importance of the bill to grocery stores in Kansas. Moon owns and operates stores in Osawatomie and Humboldt.
“I’ve been supportive of the bill and willing to testify for myself and other business owners in Kansas,” Moon said. “This bill would give me the chance to sell a new commodity and would give liquor stores the ability to grow and sell other products they currently can not sell.”
Moon said Kansas grocery stores are hindered by rules that are not in place in neighboring states like Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. Currently in Kansas, grocery stores are restricted to selling 3.2 percent beer or less.
The bill is currently still in the committee stage but Moon hopes the climate is right this year to get the bill before both the Kansas house and senate.
