OHS Senior Attends Kays Leadership Camp

Joe VanVlack, a senior at Osawatomie High School, and four other Miami County students attended Kansas Association for Youth Leadership Camp July 26-30 near Junction City.
Other Miami County attendees were Mitchell Oberg, Sydney Prothe and Balie Stamps, eighth graders from Paola Middle School, and Mallen Trull, a junior at Paola High School.
Middle and high school students from across Kansas converged at Rock Springs 4-H Center south of Junction City for the KAY event.
The camp was designed to give students the opportunity to learn leadership techniques, methods of group guidance and ideas for programs, projects and parties. This year’s theme was “There’s No Place Like Kansas” in honor of the upcoming 150th birthday of our state.
Activities during the week included team and mascot meetings, leadership labs, creative projects and special interest options.
Each day offered several recreational activities: archery, basketball, canoeing, crafts, dance, group and table games, horseback riding, swimming, volleyball and whiffle ball.
Each day ended with an evening program featuring different speakers. The last night of camp included a banquet and traditional campfire.
