100 Years Ago

Chapin Fuller, who formerly lived here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Fuller and received his high school education in this city, came in from Hoisington to visit with them and assumed the duties of Manager of Meek’s Drug Store. Chapin completed the course in the Pharmacy Dept. at Kansas University last spring.

Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Beeson entertained at dinner Sunday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beeson, of LaCeiba, Honduras, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beeson, of Kansas City. A tasty three course dinner was served and a most enjoyable afternoon spent by the guests, before the guests of honor left for their respective homes. Those invited were Mr. and Mrs. William Webb, Misses Norma Nicely, Grace Root, Mary Smith, MayBelle McEnrue, Vida Harker and Mr. Keith Clevenger.

Mrs. Burris, who has the ladies hair dressing parlor in Ottawa, will be at the Dever House in Osawatomie all day next Monday with hair goods and toilet preparations. She wants the ladies of Osawatomie to call on her that day.

75 Years Ago

Although Marcia Catherine Hewitt is eight years old, Saturday, February 29th, was only her second birthday anniversary and her mother, Mrs. R. S. Hewitt, entertained with a party honoring the occasion. Prices were won by Jean Hodges, Barbara Cole and Alberta Morris. Refreshments were served to the small guests: Jo Jean Nichols, Barbara Wack, Rosalie Billhimer, Jean Hewitt, Alberta Morris, Helen McDonald, Jean Hodges, Barbara Cole, Mary Lou Sherman, Elnora McClintock, Dorothy Ely, Wilma Jean Beck and Mary Ann Walker.

After many delays because of weather conditions and changes in government organization, the stadium and park project is expected to be completed by April 15. Work was continued today with Mike Miller as foreman. Men were transferred from other WPA projects.

The stadium is ready for pouring of concrete for the seats and the construction of the front and end walls.

The park project was started March 22 of last year.

The Junior High left their classes Friday, Feb. 21 for a half hour assembly. Mr. Cornelius talked and then introduced John Sherman who played two violin solos, accompanied by Mary Alice Jolley. Mary Alice then played two piano solos and then Miss Martin’s glee club sang a son. Beginning this Friday the home rooms will have charge of the assemblies.

Stevenson-Gerth V. F. W. Post of Lane held election of officers at the regular meeting last Thursday night. New officers are as follows:

Commander, Donald D. White; senior vice-commander, Lewis Baucom; junior vice-commander, Walter Timblin; quartermaster, Harry White; judge-advocate, George Finley; chaplain, Evan McKoon; surgeon, Stanley Rawson; trustee, Max Needham.

Alden O. Weber was elected president of the Osawatomie Historical Society at a meeting of the group held Friday night. They will serve for the coming year.

Other officers elected: Vice-president, Chester J. Ward; and secretary-treasurer, Alma Mullins.

Plans for further work on the restoration of the Old Stone Church were discussed.

25 Years Ago

Bonnie Atkins, Garnett; Edith Brooks, Osawatomie; Glenn Mowry, Beagle; Vernon Ellis, Lane; and Phyllis Alexander, Archie, Mo., all members of the Roadrunners, played last week for Osawatomie Court residents.

Attending were: Ralph Whitla, Virgil Ratlief, Anna Brown, Ruth Cockran, Evelyn Johnson, Ethel Smith, Ida Blair, Merle Castleberry, Hannah Gilchrist, Donna Waver, Bertha Galloway, Jane Schrader, Glenn Powers, Lucille Palmer, Wanda Smith, John Warren, Freda Whitney, Adolph Jurgens, Esther Ringey, Susie Adams, Sylvia Bowers, Hazel Battersby, Raymond Hightower and Beulah Holliday.

WASHINGTON – Gerald Whtestone, Miami County Farm Bureau president from Osawatomie, Kan., was in Washinton last week to meet with USDA officials and members of the Kansas congressional delegation. He was one of 113 Kansas Farm Bureau leaders who participated in the annual lobbying mission.

During its three-day mission, the delegation lobbied all 535 congressional offices.

Whetstone’s wife, Eva, accompanied him on the trip.

NORTON AFB, Calif. – Staff Sgt. Mary J. Burnett has been decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal while serving here. She is a daughter of Violet L. Burnett, Paola, Kan.

Girl Scout Troop No. 5202 met Feb. 21 in the First United Methodist Church of Osawatomie.

After the flag ceremony and roll call, the scouts worked on their world friendship patch. Cigdem Armagan, a foreign exchange student attending Osawatomie High School, shared pictures, showed her native costume and gave facts about her native country, Turkey.

Miss Armagan taught the girls how to say hello and good bye in three languages, Spanish, German and Turkish.

Jenny Hall provided the refreshments.

Others attending were: Jade Barnes, Dacia Brim, Kortney Clinton, Kyla Coffelt, Katie Drew, Rachel Lamar, Amanda Riley and Brooke Slayman. Susie Hall and Jody Slayman, leaders, also attended.

Osawatomie High School seniors Ben Pretz and Rick Woodson show off “The Blue Bomb,” a hovercraft which Woodson said uses carbon dioxide for propulsion. Woodson and Pretz won top honors with their hovercraft at the annual High School Engineering Design Competition, which was held Thursday night at Emporia High School. During the competition, the two managed to keep “The Bomb” off the ground for more than 10 seconds.
